Our next concert on Saturday 8 June at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church in Bottesford features the internationally acclaimed tenor, Mark Wilde together with the principal horn player of the Bardi Symphony Orchestra, Mark Penny, to perform Benjamin Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings under the direction of Stephen Bullamore. The evocative and atmospheric Serenade was written early in 1943 for Benjamin Britten’s partner, the tenor Peter Pears and the horn virtuoso Dennis Brain. There are six songs enclosed by a prologue and epilogue in which the solo horn plays on natural harmonics with their haunting sound.
We are playing Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture which is very well-known, and it will be interesting to hear how the contemporary composer Jonathan Dove has been inspired by that music to produce a new work, Figures in the Garden, an octet for wind ensemble. Our regular flautists Jo Conquest and Jane Bevan will be the soloists in Cimerosa’s sparkling Concerto for Two Flutes.
